ISIS/Base - Tutorial

This tutorial will show you briefly how reactions can be searched in the RefLib database using ISIS/Base.

Upon activating RefLib, the following window will pop up:

Now suppose we want to know how we can reduce a ketone. To do so, we'll have to draw the minimum amount of information about how we can do that, as in figure 2

• To specify the above reaction as a query to ISIS/Base, first start ISIS/Draw to draw the reaction. Do this by pressing this button: on the left top of the screen. When you've done that, ISIS/Draw will pop up. If you haven't followed the ISIS/Draw tutorial, I recommend you do that now first.
• Then go draw the reaction as shown above in figure 2.
• When you've done that, you press the next button , in the upperleft corner of the screen, to get the reaction to the ISIS/Base window. You should see it appear in the upper part of the screen.
• Then of course, we'll have to Search the database. So press the Search-button on top of the screen. Then choose _RSS.
• Then a the program starts to search. When it found all the answers, you can browse through them using these buttons: , on the left hand of the screen.

To submit a new query, first select the query button on top of the screen: , and then go to Isis/Draw again. Here you can select all and Cut.

Now it's your turn to find out what Diels-Alder reactions are possible with the following substructure: (figure 3)

ISIS/Base has got a very good help in the upperright corner of the screen. Here you can look for more complex functions, and some more examples you can work through. The help is very clearly written.
