How to obtain and install Chemscape Chime
Chemscape Chime is a plug-in for a web browser
(Netscape Navigator 2.0x or greater),
to display chemical structures.
A large number of formats are recognized,
among which are the common pdb and xyz formats.
The multiple xyz format, containing a series of structures,
can be used to display animations (conformational changes,
reactions, vibrations).
Chime is available for Windows, MAC and SGI systems.
Five versions can be ftp-ed from this page:
-
Chime 2.6 for Windows 95/98/2000/NT
- supported by Netscape 4.x (not v. 6!) and MS IE 4.0 browsers.
-
Chime for Windows 95/98 or NT is available as a self-extracting installer
which you can run from the DOS prompt or the Windows start menu.
-
Chime 1.02 for Windows 3.1
-
Chime for Windows 3.1 is available as an 838k self-extracting installer which you can run from the DOS prompt or from the File Manager.
-
Chime 0.9z for SGI IRIX
-
Chime for SGI IRIX is available as a 498k g'zipped, tar'ed archive for 8-bit color graphics systems (for 24-bit systems you must use the Netscape command line option "-visual pseudocolor"). You must use GNU gunzip and UNIX tar to unarchive Chime.
Then, read and agree to LICENSE.TXT and see INSTALL.TXT for installation instructions.
-
Chime 1.02 for the Macintosh (PowerPC and 68k)
-
Chime for the Macintosh is a 1209k binhexed installer with support for PowerPC and 68k Macintoshes. To install, download the file to the hard drive of your Macintosh; if it is not automatically unbinhexed by Netscape Navigator (through a helper application) you will have to use a program like Binhex or Aladdin's Stuffit Deluxe to decode the file Chime_1.02_Installer.hqx into an installer. Once decoded, double-click on the installer icon labeled Chemscape ChimeTM 1.02 Installer and follow the provided installation steps.
-
Chime 2.0 for the Macintosh
- 1.3 MB, for the PowerPC only, supports Netscape, not MS IE.
-
Molecular Design maintains a
FAQ page,
that describes the way Chime is used in web documents.
A general description (in Dutch) of chemical MIME types, helpers and plug-ins
can be found on the SAMSAM
pages.
